The Dettifoss Trail Run was first held in 2004 and has been growing in popularity ever since. The runners choose between three distances; the longest run starts from Dettifoss, the medium run from Hólmatungur and the shortest run from Vesturdalur. Ásbyrgi is the final destination for all three.
It is safe to say that when it comes to the scenery, this race is one of a kind. The run takes you through magnificent landscape overlooking the Jökulsá canyon, including Ásbyrgi.
The roughest part of the race is between Dettifoss and Hólmatungur where the surface is sand, rock and rough gravel. Just above Hólmatungur the vegetation starts and the surface switches to a dirt path. As the route proceeds down river the vegetation turns more to shrubbery. One river, Stallá needs to be waded and plastic bags are provided for those who wish. From Rauðhólar, below Hljóðaklettar, the race takes you over some rocky surfaces along the old riverbed of Jökulsá from the time Ásbyrgi was formed. The last leg of the route takes you north alongside Ásbyrgi on sheep paths through a birch forest. This part tends to be quite slow going for weary feet.
Best trail run in 2008
Though the rugged terrain can be quite a challenge for the feet and the body, the magnificent landscape surrounding the runners sends the spirit soaring and leaves them with a sense of fulfilment and an unforgettable experience. The Dettifoss Trail Run was chosen the best trail run in Iceland 2008.
